SUMMARY:THE CRUCIFIXION (John Stainer) by the OSWALD SINGERS
DESCRIPTION:The Crucifixion is an oratorio for Easter\, retelling the passion of Christ through music. John Stainer’s original version from 1887 was scored for tenor and bass soloists with choir and organ and was\, in many ways\, deliberately straightforward so it could be performed widely by both professional and amateur church musicians. \nJohn Stainer (1840-1901) was born in Southwark and entered the world of church music as a boy chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral. At age sixteen\, he moved to Worcestershire to take up the position of organist at St Michael’s College\, Tenbury\, a newly established specialist school for Anglican church music. From here he progressed to Magdalen College\, Oxford\, and enrolled as a student whilst conducting his duties as choirmaster and organist. He composed large amounts of liturgical music\, directed numerous ensembles and eventually obtained his doctorate and became an examiner for degree candidates. In 1872 he returned to St Paul’s Cathedral where\, as organist\, he raised standards and overhauled many of the traditions around choral music and liturgy. During his retirement years\, Stainer enjoyed travelling to the restorative climes of Italy. He died in Verona on Palm Sunday in 1901. \nAlthough Stainer’s compositional output was extensive\, the oratorio The Crucifixion has become his single most enduring legacy. In the tradition of the masterpiece passion settings by Johann Sebastian Bach\, Stainer’s work portrays the events leading to Christ’s death on the cross. Stainer had encountered Bach’s passions as a chorister\, singing at the first English-language performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion when he was fourteen. When he came to compose his own passion oratorio at the height of his career in 1887\, Stainer drew on many of the elements that make Bach’s music so powerful: narrative delivered through solo arias and recitatives\, interspersed with choral reflections\, rousing crowd scenes and accessible congregational singing. The libretto was by William John Sparrow Simpson (1859-1953)\, an Anglican priest and writer who had also provided the text for Stainer’s earlier cantata St Mary Magdalen. It brings together passages from all four gospels\, as well as texts from Philippians and Lamentations.  \nTickets from Ann Diamond  0775 934 1295 or email info@Stellamarisproject where ticket will be sent electronically and details of payment method given \nTicket in advance for Adults £8.00 or under 16’s £5.00 \nOn the door for Adult £10.00 or under 16’s £6.00

SUMMARY:Uniformed Groups Present A Cheque to Canon John Watson for the Workington Stella Maris Project
DESCRIPTION:Today at 10:30 Mass in Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Michael’s church\, the uniformed group presented a cheque for £450.50. This money was raised by the groups by delivering Christmas Cards locally for the parishioners. Nathan Canfield gave an explanation of why the Uniformed groups had made the decision to donate the money raised to the Workington Stella Maris Project.  \nRead this speech below:- \nOver the last 6 years our Scout group have delivered your Christmas cards in the Workington area \nWe usually make approximately £350.00 per year. This equates to £2100.00 in total. WE have used this money to help buy equipment for our activities and to subsidise some camps and trips. \nFollowing the appeal for help in the refurbishment of this beautiful church\, the Leaders decided to donate all monies raised this year to the Stella Maris Project. \nYou may ask\, why donate to this project\, and not keep the money for the group? The parish\, when Bishop Paul was the parish priest \, arranged the use of the facilities in St Joseph#s school free of charge. We also use the gardens in the summer months. If we had our own Scout building or “hut” we would have to contribute to yearly maintenance. This is our way of saying thank you to the parish. A drop in the ocean against the full total required for the restoration but ripples spread far and wide. This year we raised a total of £450.50 our highest amount yet. Part of the monies raised was a voluntary contribution made by Workington Town Council for us to deliver some of their Christmas cards. This help both parties . The Town Council saved money on postage and we raised additional funds. \nThis type of community work is the backbone of the Scouting movement. \nOn behalf of our Scout Group\, I would like to thank you all for contributing to the ongoing enjoyment and work within the community and the parish of Christ the Good Shepherd. I would like to thank the Mayor of Workington Councillor Jan et King for having the confidence in us to deliver your Christmas greetings and wishes. \nI would ow like to ask Madam Mayor to approach the altar \, assisted by the Scout Group to present Canon John with a cheque for £450.50 \nThe leaders will then arrange the Beavers\, Cubs and Scouts around the Mayor and Canon for a photograph \nAfter the presentation and photographs the group will return to their seats for the final hymn.
