Uniformed Groups Present A Cheque to Canon John Watson for the Workington Stella Maris Project

February 9, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Today at 10:30 Mass in Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Michael’s church, the uniformed group presented a cheque for £450.50. This money was raised by the groups by delivering Christmas Cards locally for the parishioners. Nathan Canfield gave an explanation of why the Uniformed groups had made the decision to donate the money raised to the Workington Stella Maris Project.

Read this speech below:-

Over the last 6 years our Scout group have delivered your Christmas cards in the Workington area

We usually make approximately £350.00 per year. This equates to £2100.00 in total. WE have used this money to help buy equipment for our activities and to subsidise some camps and trips.

Following the appeal for help in the refurbishment of this beautiful church, the Leaders decided to donate all monies raised this year to the Stella Maris Project.

You may ask, why donate to this project, and not keep the money for the group? The parish, when Bishop Paul was the parish priest , arranged the use of the facilities in St Joseph#s school free of charge. We also use the gardens in the summer months. If we had our own Scout building or “hut” we would have to contribute to yearly maintenance. This is our way of saying thank you to the parish. A drop in the ocean against the full total required for the restoration but ripples spread far and wide. This year we raised a total of £450.50 our highest amount yet. Part of the monies raised was a voluntary contribution made by Workington Town Council for us to deliver some of their Christmas cards. This help both parties . The Town Council saved money on postage and we raised additional funds.

This type of community work is the backbone of the Scouting movement.

On behalf of our Scout Group, I would like to thank you all for contributing to the ongoing enjoyment and work within the community and the parish of Christ the Good Shepherd. I would like to thank the Mayor of Workington Councillor Jan et King for having the confidence in us to deliver your Christmas greetings and wishes.

I would ow like to ask Madam Mayor to approach the altar , assisted by the Scout Group to present Canon John with a cheque for £450.50

The leaders will then arrange the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts around the Mayor and Canon for a photograph

After the presentation and photographs the group will return to their seats for the final hymn.
